Big Progress on the Petition to Ban Prong Collars in QLD 16-11-2011
Today has seen an epic push in bringing to light both the current use of Prong Collars in training, and the petition currently running to ban Prong Collars in QLD. (Link to petition here)
Accompanied by about 10 very well behaved dogs and their parents, I had the opportunity to hold a press conference at La Balsa park on the Sunshine coast attended by WIN news, Channel 7, Sunshine Coast Daily, Maroochy Journal, Caloundra Journal, as well as completing an interview for ABC Coast FM.
This was very, very exciting to have the opportunity to get the word out that these inhumane collars are in use, and give people the chance to sign the petition to have them banned.
I was very lucky to be accompanied by Duke, the German Shepherd who inspired me to begin seriously campaigning against the use of the Prong Collar (or any other inhumane training device such as choke chains or electric training collars).
Duke was an absolute star, behaving perfectly around all the dogs for the cameras, proving you do not need harsh, painful training techniques to solve serious aggression and behavioural problems in dogs. I was also stoked to see another one of my clients, Poppy, who was previously uncontrollably aggressive towards dogs as well. Needless to say, she also was fantastic, harmlessly spending time together with all the dogs, even Duke.
I want to say a big thank you to Annie (Great Dane), Daisy (Great Dane X), Jack (Jack Russel), Albi (Wolfhound x), Storm (Alaskan Malamute), Savannah (Border Collie), Indi (Kelpie), Poppy (Labrador), and Duke (German Shepherd) for bringing their parents and putting up with over an hour of cameras in the hot weather.
Till next time,
Melissa Bruce xx
